Martin Doepke
Die Schöne und das Biest
Beauty and the Beast is a musical by the German composer Martin Doepke. It was based on an idea by Andrea Friedrichs and Hans Holzbecher and had its world premiere on September 22, 1994, at the Sartory Theater in Cologne. The book was written by Christian Bienieck, and the lyrics were penned by Elke Schlimbach and Grant Stevens.
A key difference from the Disney version of the fairy tale, which first made its way onto the musical stage in Europe in 1995, lies partly in the music and partly in the fact that the story is set not in France but in a small village in Germany. Consequently, some of the protagonists have typical German names rather than French ones. Musically, Doepke’s score offers a mix of ballads, up-tempo pieces, and fast-paced ensemble numbers.
